Drinking glass Hergiswil
The "Auftreiben" technique
At Glasi Hergiswil, the glass makers are proud of their artisanal know-how which they expertly apply to the rims of every glass. They are the best "Auftreibers". Auftreiben is the oldest rim making technique. After they blow the piece of glass to perfection, they break off the finished piece of glass from the pipe. The glass is cut by a cord on the floor and then returned to the oven, into the fire, to be heated up to 1000°C. A piece of wood or iron is then inserted into the glowing opening and the glass is pulled outward from the inside, much like a potter works on his wheel. This is an incredibly technical procedure which demands the highest artisanal skill.
